Notes: This rare Fancher Model snare drum is an excellent addition to any collection. The solid Walnut shell construction makes this drum even more noteworthy as very few solid Walnut drums can be found today. There is no real distinction between the “Fancher” model snare drum and the “Artist” model other than the ‘Fancher” name that appears on the typical Slingerland badge. It is a ten tube lug drum with the patented “Tone Flange.” This model does not appear in a known Slingerland catalog but several “Fancher” model snare drums do exist.
Frank Fancher was a champion rudimental drummer in the 1920’s. His picture appears in the 1929 Slingerland catalog as an endorser of Slingerland drums.
This is an all original drum except for the heads and snares. The current heads are calf skin with the top head being a new calfskin head tucked on the original flesh hoop to accommodate the brass “Tone Flange.” A “Tone Flange” is slightly larger than modern US made heads so specialty heads are required. There is a small amount of wear to the lacquer finish near the badge.
The one non-original feature of this drum is the heater. There is a large receptacle mounted on the outside of the drum shell into which an electrical plug fits in order to power the light inside the drum which was needed to warm and keep the calf heads from becoming too slack from the humidity in the air. The actual hole drilled in the side of the drum is much smaller than the receptacle. This was left on the drum as it is a common feature of drums from this era..
