1924-5 “Super Ludwig” model 4”x14”
What a great drum! This is one of the earliest of the Super-Ludwig snare drums produced by Ludwig & Ludwig. The drum is in excellent condition with litttle to no blemishes on the shell. In our estimation, mirroring the opinions of long time respected collectors, is that this version of the internal rod attachment with the pinned attachments instead of the washer and nut attachment is the earliest version of the “Super-Ludwig” snare drum. Ludwig & Ludwig made very few with this attachment method before switching to the threaded ends attached with washer and nut fasteners inside the drum. This drum also has the 12 strand snares, which are the earliest configuration. The later and more common versions had 10 strand snare mechanisms. The snares are original wire wound silk in excellent condition. The drum has no snare guards as the first of the “Super-Ludwig” models did not come with snare guards. In 1927 Ludwig & Ludwig started offering snare guards on their “Super-Ludwig” models and at the same time they were made available for $1 a pair as an add-on for earier models. This drum appears to be all original except for the heads.
There are no extra holes although the vent hole is slightly enlarged, most likely due to the addition of a heater/light bulb attachment common in the day with calf heads. There is one hairline crack in one of the tube lug ends but this is fairly common among the tube lug drums and does not affect the tuning or functioning of the drum. A couple of the tension rods are slightly bent but this also does not affect the tuning of the drum. The drum sounds wonderful and could be used for any type of music. If equipped with a different selection of heads it would be a great orchestral snare drum, very sensitive, warm sounding and powerful for the 4”x14” size. This drum is a true piece of history as well as a great playing drum or collectable. We have not done anything to this drum except clean off a little dust and dirt from the tension rods. It is rare to find a drum of this era in this condition so we have left it in "As Found" condition to preserve its originality. This is one of the finest 4”x14” drums we have seen.
