From the 1928 Ludwig catalog – “Ludwig drums are made to meet various requirements. The pocketbook governs in most purchases, and for that reason we have designed a new “Pioneer” line of drums that range in between our lowest priced snare drums and the very best Ludwig professional makes. The Ludwig “Pioneer” snare drum is a high-grade separate tension model drum, designed to sell at an intermediate price.” This “Pioneer” is in excellent condition with no plating loss and very few light scratches to the shell. This drum has original wire wound silk snares and calf heads, which we do not believe are original; the bottom head is split. Earlier straight rim version with “Pioneer” engraved on the top rim. There is one non-original tension rod. An excellent collectible but could also be a player.
