Beautiful and rare all wood Calf Bawl imitation. As shown in the 1920 Dixie Music House catalog, this Calf Bawl imitation was one of a series of imitations sold in "Dummers Vade Mecum", a drummer's catalog of instruments, traps, and hardware similar to and including items from Ludwig and other manufacturers. The drummers of the time kept a large collection of imitations and sound effects to enhance their performances in the theaters of the day. Our Calf Bawl imitation is a two-piece, cigar shaped wooden tube with an internal reed and shaped mouthpiece; it does not come apart at the seam. The imitation works perfectly. The total length is 9" with a diameter of 1". This trap comes from the same series of imitations as our "Perfect" Baby Cry imitation. This Calf Bawl imitation whistle is from a collection of traps and sound effects formerly owned by Emil Kresse, principal percussionist and timpanist of the Philadelphia Orchestra (1901 – 1945) who passed them on to Fred D. Hinger, also a former principal percussionist and timpanist with the Philadelphia Orchestra (1948 – 1967) and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra (1967 – 1983). This is a unique opportunity to own a rare imitation with a fine provenance that will become a centerpiece of any vintage traps collection.
