This is a unique proto-Type drum with a 15 inch bottom and 14” top which gave the drum an extended collar.  This drum was also used to experiment with things such as venting and ultimately became the drum that sat on the stand next to other experimental choices being tried when the Space-Tone drum was born (see the description and history of the Space-Tone snare drum).  A nice sounding drum in itself but the real claim to fame for this drum is that it is an example of the Hinger experimentations and the drum that was used as a “table” which led to the Space-Tone discovery.  In the pictures you can see the venting ideas, the muffling “tape” idea Hinger first used prior to the idea of cutting out the bottom layer of an Emperor batter head to make a double thickness layer at the edge of the drum and the expended collar.  You also see the use of two different size shells combined to make a 14” batter head over a 15” resonating chamber.  Truly a great piece of the Hinger Touch-Tone Company history.
