This is a rare 4 1/2 octave Deagan model 266 Artist's Special xylophone. The model 266 is a colossal instrument at over 88" in length with graduated bars ranging in size from 2 3/4" W x 21 1/2" L to 2" W x 6 1/8" L. It is tuned as a xylophone over the full 4 1/2 octave F - C range with tunable nickel plated brass resonators. This instrument has its original A=440 tuning and all original bars mounted on original rails. The original rails utilize the early style of bar suspension so they are not resting on felt, allowing them to resonate to their full potential. The bar suspension jacks have been cut at the top so the bars can be removed without removing their mounting strings. This is a practical modification because the oak rails are so long, and the bars are so heavy, that trying to transport them together is impractical. The instrument is mounted on a Pyle adjustable cart with locking wheels. Given the size and weight of the complete instrument, the original Deagan model frame is insufficient and unstable. The bars are in marvelous condition. There is one bar with some edge damage that has been sanded but there is no chipping and no cracks. The bars with their original tuning are slightly out of tune at the low end making this a good candidate for re-tuning which we will be happy to arrange to the new owner's specifications. The moveable section of the tunable resonator for the low F# is a replacement. All Artist Special xylophone models produce the dark rich tone that is preferred by many professional orchestral players. This is the only model Deagan 266 we have ever had the pleasure to offer attesting to its rarity. It's a special instrument suitable for the xylophone soloist or orchestral player.
