Deagan King George marimba #57 "Gladys Amy Herbertson". This is one of the famous Deagan King George marimbas made for the International Marimba Symphony Orchestra tour in the early 1930's. Only 100 of these orchestra member marimbas were made along with one special model for the orchestra conductor, Clair Omar Musser.. This instrument, along with the rest of the IMSO, made its Carnegie Hall debut on Thursday, May 16, 1935., near the end of their international tour.. This instrument is FL 57, F-F range, low frame height. The original owner who played it on the IMSO tour was Gladys Amy Herdertson as shown on the personalized plaque on the front rail of the instrument. Ms. Herbertson is shown in the attached picture playing this marimba in later years with the "House of David" orchestra. The instument is in excellent overall condition and comes complete with its original cases, also in excellent condition. The bars are in nice, original shape. The original finish on the bars is a little dull now but the wood in these bars is of the finest quality and sounds fantastic. All of the solid brass elements on the frame, including the solid brass resonators are in perfect shape. The black diamond pearl on the rails and ends is bright with little fading and only slight shrinkage. We have compared this BDP covering with other King George instruments and even though it is brighter than other instruments, it is of the same style and pattern leading us to believe that if it has been replaced, the material used was the same material used for the original instruments. The sound of these instruements, due to the heavy, tunable, solid brass resonators and hand selected rosewood, is unsurpassd by any other marimba. The unique combination of this completely intact marimba, it's original cases, marked with the original IMSO logo and marimba number, and picture of the original owner playing the instrument, make this a unique representative of the IMSO and its history. This marimba would be at home in a museum or in a reunited IMSO tour. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a remarkable piece of western percusson history.
