This is a rare set of Deagan Musical Rattles from the early 20th century. As shown in the attached Deagan Musical Novelties catalog, this set is referred to as the "style A". They function like a standard wooden ratchet. The player holds the rattle by the wooden handle and whirls it around in a circular motion. The metal cog attached to the handle activates a wooden hammer that strikes the tuned bell plate making a rapid, pitched tone. The sound is like playing a standard roll on a glockenspiel bar. The faster the rattle is rotated, the faster the "roll". Each rattle has a single tuned glockenspiel bar that is 1 3/4" wide, complete with a resonator making them quite loud. The overall size of a single rattle is 3" W x 11" L. This set of 8 rattles is completely original and in perfect working order. The 8 pitches from low to high are C, D, E, G, G#, A, B, C. There are very few of these sets known to exist making this a unique addition to any percussion sound effects collection.
