This is an extremely rare, pre-1910 set of Deagan “Resonator” bells, the predecessor to the Parsifal bells. We only know of two original sets of this model. This 3 octave set and another smaller, 2 ½ octave set. This model has 1” wide bars that are ½” thick. They are described by Deagan as; “flat top, early model case resonator bells with fins and Halcomb steel bars.” Being pre 1915 the pitch of these bells is below A=440. However, they can be re-tuned to A=440 or A=442 upon request for a slight additional cost. The interesting shape of the underside of all of the lower bars was part of the original tuning to help enhance the fundamental of the lower bar’s pitch. The added “fins” attached to the resonators at the side of the bars help focus the air waves down into the resonators which enhances their tone.
The bars are in their original heavy solid oak case with the removable lid. There are a few minor dings and wear to the case, as would be expected, but it is still very solid and very functional.
A 3 octave set of original Deagan Parsifal bells is a rare find. This set, tuned up to modern day pitch will make a fine addition to any orchestra's percussion section. As is, this very early, all original rare model will make a great addition to any collection.
