This is an early set of model 1120 Deagan Round Top orchestra bells with 7/8” wide bars. The model 1120 was produced by Deagan between 1910 and 1929.  We estimate that this set was one of the earlier pre 1920 sets because the model name does not appear on the low G bar as they did later.

This set of bars has been mounted in one of our new custom cases and arranged so that the accidentals overlap the naturals making them easier to play.  Also, the custom case has reversed the naturals so that the peg holding the bar in place is next to the player rather than away from the player in the playing zone. This arrangement reverses the bar letters but makes the instrument much easier to play. Deagan made this same change to the design of their bells beginning in the 1930’s. The new case is nice and compact so that they will not take up much space in a set-up, which is very helpful for a “pit” set-up. The top of the case is also removable.

The set sounds great, a beautiful looking and sounding set of orchestra bells. The condition of the bars is good especially for their age.  There is some minimal plating loss and pitting but overall the bars are still in fine condition.  This would be an excellent instrument for a gigging musician to be used in a “pit” or small orchestra situation. Also appropriate for a large orchestra especially for certain styles of music.
