Here is a beautiful and rare example of a pre Civil War rope tension drum made by John Meacham. This 23” x21” (width and depth) rope tension drum is a fantastic display drum highly decorated with original painted design and elaborate decorated tack pattern found on early Civil War and pre Civil War drums. The internal paper tag, although warn and partially missing, gives us enough information to know this drum was made by John Meacham between 1813 and 1819, while his shop resided at 104 State Street Albany NY. This information is according to the book –“Military Goods Dealers &b Makers 1785-1915 by Bazelon & McGuinn.” (see photo of book page)
This drum was restored with new heads, rope and leather ears appropriate to the period by Jim Ellis of The Cooperman Company, Vermont. No other alterations or restorations have been made.
This is a very rare drum for the collector of early instruments, rope tension drums, Civil War era drums, Military equipment etc. Drums like this one only come up for sale or auction on rare occassions. The last listing Mr. Ellis, was able to find for a similar drum was offered by Heritage auctions of NY a number of years ago making this a rare opportunity indeed for the collector of early instruments.
