Here is a 1930s Ludwig & Ludwig 6 ½”x14” solid mahogany shell “Super Ludwig” with real gold plated hardware. This snare drum was being played in L.A. recording studios when it was refinished and had all of its hardware re-plated in gold, including the badge. After its "studio" years, the instrument was played frequently by a member of The Phoenix Symphony for many seasons. The drum was originally a wrapped drum when it was built inthe 1930s. The interior still retains its original white paint but does not contain a date stamp. The muffler on the drum is a later Leedy style muffler, replacing the original Ludwig version, but there are no extra holes drilled into the solid mahogany shell which has been nicely refinished. The natural redish mahogany finish complemented by the gold plated hardware makes for a truly stunning appearance. The instrument is equipped with individually adjustable gut snares and calf heads both top and bottom giving the drum great warmth along with lots of dark body and great projection. This is truly a great sounding instrument. Overall, this is a beautiful looking and sounding drum, set up and tuned as it would have been in the 1930s.
