This is an early 20th century Leedy model no. 536 concert grand marimba on a custom frame. As shown in the attached pre-1920 Leedy catalog, the 4 octave, C-C, model 536 was Leedy's first and largest marimba produced. It has bar widths ranging from a massive 3" on the low end to 2" at the top. As with all of the earliest keyboard instruments, the bars are tuned to the fundamental pitch but the upper harmonics are not tuned making the low range of the instrument sound out of tune. The bars have been inspected by John Salazar who has confirmed the bars are in tune given the original parameters. The original wire frames for these instruments were fragile and didn't survive over the years. The frame for this instrument was custom made for this instrument by its previous owner. It incorporates a unique, beautiful prairie design of maple and birch that would look right at home in a Frank Lloyd Wright building. The original resonators are in excellent condition with nice, bright nickel plating. This is a unique, one of a kind instrument that will make a beautiful display piece and practice instrument.
