Superb, early 20th century 5”x14”, solid mahogany shell, Super-Ludwig Standard model snare drum. This is a rare WOOD Shell 5”x14” “Super Ludwig” snare drum from c. 1930 as shown in the attached 1927 Ludwig catalog. We date the drum between 1930 - 33 given the block lettering on the bottom rim and the absence of an internal muffler. All hardware is original to the drum with the exception of thre rim hooks which were replaced with period correct parts. All of the nickel plating is in excellent condition and everything works perfectly. The natural color of the mahogany shell is a beautiful dark brown color. There is some wear with minor dings although nothing that compromises the wood or the overall appearance. The shell is perfectly in round so modern heads fit and tune easily on the drum. It has maple reinforcement rings that are tight to the shell. Currently the drum has new plastic heads top and bottom (Remo & Evans) with adjustable gut/wire snares. The instrument sounds great and would serve very well as a sensitive orchestral snare drum or as a collectable.
