This is a one of a kind 5-octave marimba, made by the Los Angeles based marimba maker Del Roper, for the famous marimbist Earl Hatch. The instrument has bar widths ranging from extra wide 3 3/8" bars in the low octave to 1 5/8" at the top. The resonators are all wooden, made from mahogany plywood, with square sound chambers. The frame is also made from mahogany with brass accent columns in the ends. The wide bar low octave has a unique tuning that accentuates the bass notes. This is perfect for playing the Bach transcriptions that Earl Hatch was famous for. It allows the player to easily balance the bass line with the upper parts which is a challenge on conventional marimbas. The wooden resonators and matching frame are in well preserved condition and give the insytrument a beautiful, unique appearance. The large resonators are individually suspended on the frame making the instrument suprisingly transsportable for a 5-octave instrument that is almost 8 feet long. All of the rosewood bars are in excellent condition. There are a few scratches here and there on the resonators and frame but it is in remarkably good condition. This marimba is a piece of percussion history that still sounds great. It is a great solo instrument that would also make a unique center piece to a marimba orchestra or percussion ensemble.
