Nokes & Nicolai thunder clapper sound effect. As shown in the 1920's Nokes & Nicolai drum catalog, this crank operated sound effect is comprised of two hollowed wooden cyllinders that are struck by a pair of attached wooden balls. There are two, four tooth sprockets attached to an axle that actuate the wooden balls. The sprockets are arranged so that the balls strike the sounding chambers in a seemingly random pattern. It produces a sound very similar to the cricket effect shown on the same page. As described in the Nokes catalog, this produces a sound that imitates a pop riveter, derrick, or group of crickets. This is a unique and ingenious sound effect.
