This rare Fancher Model snare drum will make an excellent addition to any collection.  The solid Walnut shell construction makes this drum noteworthy as very few solid Walnut drums can be found today.  There is no real distinction between the “Fancher” model snare drum and the “Artist” model other than the ‘Fancher” name that appears on the typical Slingerland badge.  It is a ten tube lug drum with the patented “Tone Flange” under the top head. This model does not appear in a known Slingerland catalog but several “Fancher” model snare drums do exist.  Frank Fancher was a champion rudimental drummer in the 1920’s.  His picture appears in the 1929 Slingerland catalog as an endorser of Slingerland drums.   All hardware, including the tone-flange, is original to the drum except one tension rod which is a bit shorter than the others but looks to be Slingerland of the era. Both heads are calfskin with the top head being a new calfskin head tucked on an original metal flesh hoop to accommodate the brass “Tone Flange.”  A “Tone Flange” is slightly larger than modern US made heads so specialty heads are required. The bottom head is also an older calf skin head that is in very good condition.  The snares are “snappy wire” snares of the era that may be original to the drum. There is some wear to the lacquer finish on a couple panels of the drum near the badge caused by a light bulb heater that had once been installed. The heater left a small, approximately 3/8”, hole where the cord had gone through the shell. The original throw-off does not work smoothly which is a common problem with Slingerland drums from this era.  It will hold the snares in the engaged position and throw the snares off, but needs help to lift and re-engage the snares. Overall this drum is in very good condition with only light cleaning preserving the original look and patina of a vintage instrument.
