1929 Ludwig & Ludwig “New Era” snare drum.  This is a great opportunity to add a very rare Ludwig & Ludwig model snare drum, that had a short lived production run, to your collection.  In 1929 Ludwig & Ludwig introduced three new models of snare drums, the Super-Sensitive, Standard-Sensitive and New Era models.  Of the three, only the Super-Sensitive model was popular enough for continued production. The New Era and Standard Sensitive models were phased out very quickly and the New Era seems to be the most difficult to find. The “New Era” model snare drum dates from 1929-1930. The unique feature of the drum is that it has two sets of internal snares and no external snares. One set of internal snares presses against the top head, as the Super-Sensitive model does, and one set presses against the bottom head.  This idea did not catch on and actually did not produce a great sounding drum. As a result, the model was discontinued and now has become a valuable collectable because of its rarity. This drum is in very nice condition with only a few non-original parts, mounting nuts, and bolts replaced with of the era or similar parts.  One set of internal snares are Mike Curotto reproductions, one tension knob and one piece of the internal mechanism are also reproductions. The reproductions are virtually identical to the original parts and do not detract from the value or appearance of the drum. The shell is slightly out of round but modern heads do fit. There was some slight separation of the glue rings that has been stabalized and filled. The top head is a vintage Amrawco calf head and the bottom is a clear “Classic Aquarian” head allowing for easy viewing of the two internal mechanisms.  The hardware is worn as one would expect for a drum from this era. The White Marine Pearl (White Avalon Pearl) is in good condition with very slight marks and yellowing. Overall this drum is in very good condition and will make a nice addition to any collection.
