This is an early 1920s Ludwig and Ludwig 8 lug, 4”x15” snare drum with a heavy two-piece brass shell. This drum is dated between 1923-1925 based on the facts that prior to 1923 Ludwig made only 6 lug drums and starting in 1925 Ludwig’s top line, heavy two-piece brass shell drums, like this example, were 10 lug drums. This drum was used for years with the Phoenix Symphony when a nice light but full bodied sensitive sound was needed. The nickel over brass shell is in excellent condition with no plating loss and no dings. The single flanged brass rims are also in excellent condition while the throw-off has some slight plating loss.  Over the years there may have been a few clips replaced but they are all from the same era as the drum.  The only non-original parts on the drum are 3 replaced tension rods. Years ago, Fred. Hinger was asked to put a set of his cable snares on the drum. Mr. Hinger moved the throw-off up on the shell to accommodate the collar of the plastic bottom head.  Therefore there are two small extra holes in the shell at the throw-off. The drum is currently set up with blue cable snares, which gives the drum great power for a 4” drum while maintaining great sensitivity. Here is the description of the Concert Dance Model  model from an early 1920's Ludwig catalog: “The Concert Dance Model, It is 4”x15”, a size that is well adapted for dance and theatre work. Small, light and strong, yet sufficient volume for large orchestras.”  This drum was in the hands of the same owner for nearly 50 years. If you do not have a 4”x15” drum in your collection this is an excellent choice and opportunity.
