This is an early Duplex separate tension snare drum, circa 1900. It has a 5”x16” overall drum size (3”x15 ½” shell) with rosewood veneered shell and hoops along with 20 duplex separate tension rods. In the early days drum sizes were given as overall dimensions. Therefore a shell with a 15 ½” diameter plus the ½” thickness of the rims (1/4” each) added up to a drum listed as having a 16” diameter. The same applied to the height of a drum. In this case, the shell is 3” high but adding the 1 ¼” rims to both sides (minus the collar of the head) adds up to a 5” overall height. The Rosewood veneer, along with the 20 nickel plated lugs and rods, make this an eye-catching display drum. The snares are similar to the original “Waterproof Woven Snares” but are replacements along with the newly tucked skin heads. The rosewood shell has been refurbished with a warm satin look that looks great under the lights. The top hoop Duplex badge is original to the drum. The round Duplex shell badge was missing but we found an original badge and grommet from the era. All hardware is original to the drum or correct-era parts.
